1,500-Year-Old Golden Medallion with Jesus Image Displayed in Turkish Museum

A 1,500-year-old gold medallion that has the image of Jesus Christ is being displayed at an archaeological museum in Turkey. The museum, formally established in 1968, can be found in the northern province of Corum.

As reported on the Turkish website Anadolu Agency, the golden medallion has been found by treasure hunters during some illegal excavations in 2017. It was later seized after an anti-smuggling operation conducted by Turkish security teams.

The piece of artifact, called the Christ Pantocrator Medallion, is now part of the Corum Archaeological Museum in Turkey. It is being displayed at the museum in a special showcase, which is said to be attracting visitors’ attention.

Archaeologist Resul Ibis, in speaking to Anadolu Agency, referred to the golden medallion as “one of the most precious items at the museum.” He also noted the uniqueness of the artifact.

“The artifact depicts Jesus Christ holding the Bible in his left hand, and raising his right hand in blessing,” he described. “This depiction, which we usually see in churches, icons and mosaics, is for the first time on a gold coin, engraved in najaf stone on a gold filigree,” he further explained.

Ibis also noted that in the fourth and fifth centuries, religious depictions of divine people became more common. According to him, these kinds of artifacts were made during those times to preserve the memory of people considered holy and as a form of glorification.
